Word of the Year 2016
Have you thought about your New Years Resolutions yet? I’ve never been one for making them personally, as I find that so many people fail by the end of January, it has a negative impact on life. Especially when the days are cold and short and all the fun of Christmas is over with for another year. I have written a blog about goal setting for the new year (You can find it here!) though, and this is a great way to make sure you are on track to make sure you are inspired enough to carry on and achieve all you set out to in the coming year.
One of the other ways I’ve found helpful is to adopt a “word of the year”. This can be anything you choose, that has meaning for you. I have done this a few times over the years since I first heard about it. The important thing about it is to be reminded throughout the year and feel good rather than bad about how your life is going.
My word this year is FOCUS, as I feel that now my business is a year old, it’s time to focus a little bit more on what I want to achieve for myself and my business.
In the past I have found it helpful to have a word which just makes me think and takes me back on track. It makes me feel positive not negative – especially if I can see that I am achieving that word. If I’m not achieving the word it helps me get back on track with my thoughts. The first time I did it, I found it difficult to choose one word and I ended up with two, but by year two and three it came much easier as I just knew straight away what my word would be.
The other benefit of a word of the year is that it doesn’t take into account time scales of individual goals – who knows how long it will take to achieve each one? For me when I am setting goals it is usually a best guess, but its a bit of a stab in the dark, especially for longer term goals!
Here is a blog post from Christine Kane, where I first learnt about the word of the year.
I’d love to hear from you if you decide to choose a word of the year, and let me know how it goes. Or if you’ve tried it before and how that went for you.
